Small Animal Care
Small Animal Veterinary Care for Furry Friends & Pocket Pets in Fort Payne
Small mammals require specialized care to stay healthy. They often have fast metabolisms and can decline quickly when health issues arise. Because of this, early detection of issues and routine care are especially important. Health concerns often develop gradually in small mammals, with subtle signs that can be difficult to recognize without regular evaluation. Changes in eating habits, activity level, or weight can be early indicators of underlying concerns.
At Fort Payne Animal Hospital, we provide care for small animals with an understanding of their unique health needs. Their physiology and care requirements require a more specialized and attentive approach.
Small Mammals We Treat
We provide care for a wide range of small mammals, each with specific health and environmental needs:
- Rabbits
- Ferrets
- Guinea pigs
- Chinchillas
- Rats and mice
- Hamsters and gerbils
- Sugar gliders
- Hedgehogs
Each species requires a unique approach to handling, diet, and medical care to support long-term health. Our team is experienced in providing care that reflects those needs.
Unique Health Concern for Pocket Pets
Common health issues in small mammals include dental overgrowth, digestive problems, obesity, and nutritional imbalances. Rabbits and rodents are particularly prone to dental issues that can affect their ability to eat and maintain proper weight. Ferrets may develop adrenal disease or insulin-related conditions, while guinea pigs require specific vitamin intake to prevent deficiencies.
Housing and diet play a significant role in small animal health. Improper cage setup, lack of enrichment, or incorrect feeding can lead to many preventable issues over time. Our team can provide clear, practical guidance to help you create an environment that supports your pet’s long-term well-being.
Because small animals often mask signs of illness, routine veterinary visits are one of the most effective ways to detect problems early. Preventive care can help reduce the likelihood of more serious conditions and support a longer, healthier life.
Small animals require attention to detail, consistency, and an understanding of their specific needs. With the right care and environment, they can remain active, healthy, and comfortable. Pet owners in Fort Payne, Rainsville, Fyffe, Collinsville, and surrounding communities have access to a team familiar with the needs of small mammals

We had to take our sick boy in on a Sunday night. Doctor answered me and volunteered to meet me. We left our sweet boy which required surgery the next morning. He was a very sick guy and unfortunately we had to say goodbye the next day. But I wanna thank the staff for being so seeet to us and doc. You don’t know how much it meant to see the care in your eyes. We are broken but we definitely would trust him and this staff with any of our babies!Posted on Google![]()
